How does the AI photo background changer work?

Upload a photo, pick a scene from 16 ready-made templates, and the AI rebuilds the background around you. It keeps your face, hair, outfit, and pose exactly as in the source, then matches the lighting and color temperature of the new scene. Most generations finish in 20-40 seconds. We use the KIE compositeCharacter model, which is one of the more consistent for identity-preserving background swaps.

How is this different from the AI Headshot Generator?

Different jobs. The headshot generator regenerates you fully: new suit, new pose, new corporate lighting, new background, recruiter-ready. You can upload your own photo, choose from 16 background scenes, and generate a changed-background photo without adding a credit card. Free generations are attached to your account so results can be saved and abuse can be prevented.

Can I change the background of a photo to white?

Yes. Two ways. (1) Pick any scene template you like and then in the prompt box write something like 'replace background with a clean neutral white studio backdrop, soft even lighting' — the AI prioritizes the text instruction over the template scene and renders white. (2) Skip the template, write the same prompt, and submit. Either way the cutout edges are AI-blended (not hard-cropped) and your face, expression, and outfit stay the same. Useful for passport photos, work badges, visa applications, or e-commerce product shots.

Will the AI change my face or body?

No. The model is tuned to keep the subject (face, hair, outfit, pose) exactly as in the source photo. It only rebuilds the background and adjusts the lighting on the subject to match. If your face looks different, send us the source and we'll check.

What kind of source photo works best?

Best: subject takes up most of the frame, clear edges between you and the background, even lighting on the face. Worst: heavily backlit photos, motion blur, or busy patterns close to your hairline. Minimum 800x800 resolution. Phone selfies work great, professional shots even better.

Can I upload a group photo?

Yes, but the model works best with one or two people. Larger groups (4+) sometimes get distorted around edges because the AI tries to keep too many faces consistent. For wedding or team photos, generate one person at a time and composite manually if needed.

Does it work with full-body shots or just selfies?

Both. Selfies, waist-up shots, and full-body all work. Full-body actually gives the AI more context for matching ground plane and shadows, so the scene blend tends to be more believable.

Why does the lighting sometimes look off?

Two common causes. One, the source has very harsh directional light (like direct sun from behind) that the AI can't fully repaint over. Two, the chosen scene has very different lighting (indoor cafe vs your outdoor selfie). Try a scene with similar lighting direction to your source, or pick a softer template like the modern office.

Can I use this for product photos?

Technically yes, but the model is trained on people, not products. For e-commerce shots of objects, you'll get better results with a dedicated background removal tool. For people-with-product (like a creator holding a gadget), this works fine.

Will my photo be stored or used to train AI?

Your photo is saved privately on encrypted Cloudflare R2 storage, tied to your account. Not shared with other users. Not used to train AI models. You can delete it any time from your dashboard. We follow GDPR and CCPA standards.

What happens after my 2 free generations?

Can I add my own custom background instead of the 16 templates?

Not on the free tier (the 16 templates are picked because the AI handles them reliably). For custom backgrounds, the paid AI Lab supports uploading any reference scene image, including your own photos of a real place you've been to. The free tier stays template-only to keep results predictable.
